Ashoka Fellow Megan Mukuria began ZanaAfrica in 2007 to create a systems-change to solve the issue of sustainable delivery of sanitary pads and health education for the 4 in 5 girls and women in East Africa who currently lack access. Megan brings 19 years of leadership in Kenya in non-profits and creating urban and rural businesses. Megan built ZanaAfrica from concept to a hybrid social enterprise with diversified funding from governments, foundations, and impact investors. ZanaAfrica has grown to 22 staff and annual impact of >50,000 girls and women. Pad sales launched in 2014 and this year Eveready East Africa signed on to be the exclusive distributor of ZanaAfrica’s Nia brand pads.
